Resolution of the Libertarian Party of Mecklenburg County
Whereas, the foundational documents of our republic clearly demonstrate that government collaboration of business is not part of the proper role of our nation's government; and,
Whereas, any economic benefit from government subsidy of professional sports is illusory, due to
- the loss of disposable income in other areas of the local economy; and,
- the harm from the withdrawal of resources from proper functions of government, such as crime prevention; and,
Whereas, the involvement of government in professional sports requires choices on the basis of expertise that politicians lack, as well as resulting in consequences that they will not bear; and,
Whereas, government funding necessarily and immorally forces some taxpayers to fund facilities that they may choose not to use, or may actually not be able to afford to use; and,
Whereas, any government expenditure confiscates resources otherwise available to provide a family's shelter, food, healthcare, education, etc.; and,
Whereas, government subsidy of any business forces productive, taxpaying businesses to finance their politically-connected competitors, a shakedown of Mafia-like mentality;
therefore,
Be it resolved, that the Libertarian Party of Mecklenburg County opposes and will oppose the use of taxpayer funds for all for-profit sports and entertainment, including the Charlotte Knights and the newly-proposed major-league baseball stadium; and,
Be it further resolved, the the Party call upon our Charlotte-Mecklenburg officials to end their recent trend toward providing subsidies for private athletic franchises.
