From the desk of Barbara Howe
Greetings Libertarians,
News on the Ballot Access Lawsuit Front
The NC Court of Appeals issued its opinion on Monday, October 19,
ruling 2-1 in favor of the state of NC. The dissenting judge was Judge
Calabria, while Judges Martin and Steelman voted in favor of the state.
You may read the opinion here. <http://lpnc.org/lawsuit/081413-1.pdf>
While this news is disappointing, it was not at all unexpected.
Matters of this magnitude are seldom determined in the lower courts.
Because of the split decision, we will automatically have our case
heard in the NC Supreme Court, should we appeal.
And, we have seen the case through this far. We will appeal. I will
keep you posted as the case makes it through yet another level of
judicial red tape.
Preparing for 2010
While the legal battle continues, we are on the North Carolina ballots
at least through 2012. It's time to be planning runs for office in
2010. All US Congressional seats, one US Senate seat, all NC House and
NC Senate seats, and numerous county positions are up for re-election
in 2010.
Because we are a qualified party, we will participate fully in the
2010 election in the same way as Republicnas and Democrats. Filing for
offices for the 2010 general election begins February 8, 2010 and runs
through February 26.
!!!IMPORTANT!!! Register Libertarian by November 11, 2009
To file as a Libertarian candidate for the 2010, you must be
registered as Libertarian 90 days prior to filing for office. Since
many of you were forcibly changed to Unaffiliated in 2005 when the LP
lost ballot status, you might not have re-registered as Libertarian.
Please be sure to change your party affiliation as soon as possible.
If you want to run for office in 2010, please be sure you have changed
your registration to Libertarian by November 11, 2009.
If you have questions about running for office, please contact me at
<chair at lpnc.org>.
Welcome New Affiliates
We are happy to recognize several newly organized county parties. Most
recently Alamance County and Union County have officially organized
county LP affiliates. Several other counties are in the process of
organizing formal affiliates. If you live in a county that has no
official party organization and would like to help organize, please
contact <county_organizer at lpnc.org> to learn how you can help.
Outreach News
The LPNC has had a busy month doing outreach at the two major fairs in
the state. We had a booth at the Dixie Classic in Winston-Salem from
October 2-11 and are hosting an information booth at the North
Carolina State Fair in Raleigh. The State Fair runs from October 15
through October 25.
Open Position
Derrick Hinson has resigned from the LPNC Executive Committee, leaving
an at-large vacancy on the committee. If you would like to be
considered to fill this position until an election can be held in
convention in 2010, please contact me at <chair at lpnc.org>.
Support LPNC!
While it's exciting not to have to ask members for dollars to support
ballot access efforts, we still need your financial support. We
continue to carry a significant balance with the attorneys who are
handling our legal case. The upcoming 2010 elections are going to be a
huge opportunity for Libertarian candidates. We hope to have resources
to support targeted races.
Please make your best contribution today at <www.lpnc.org/donate.php>.
The best support comes from your monthly pledge. Knowing our committed
income allows the Executive Committee to make better long term plans.
Please consider a donation today.
With the current financial crisis, evidence of political corruption,
the efforts to "reform" health care, the Libertarian Party is needed
now, more than ever. Please make your best donation today.

In liberty,
Barbara Howe
PS
Since regaining legal status in May of 2008, Libertarian registration
has grown from zero to 6028. Please remember to change your
registration, if you haven't already done so.

"Those who pretend they want to preserve freedom, while they are eager to fix
prices, wage rates, and interest rates at a level different from that of the
market, delude themselves. There is no other alternative to
totalitarian slavery
than liberty. There is no other planning for freedom and general
welfare than to
let the market system work. There is no other means to attain full employment,
rising real wage rates, and a high standard of living for the common man than
private initiative and free enterprise."
