Greetings, friends,
I just sent the following letter to the Observer. I doubt that it will
get printed. Or if it is, it will be edited into an unrecognizable
version of what I've actually said. I post it here as a testimony to
my real message to them.
Chris
To the editor:
I wished that I had stock in crocodile tears when I saw your editorial
complaining about voter ignorance in the recent gubernatorial race. I
had the same thought after your editorial deploring the role of money
in political campaigns.
I didn't understand how you could take such positions after the sad
political reporting in your own paper. The worst point was printing a
voter guide of Council of State races that didn't even list all of
the candidates. Your reporters ran page after page of stories about
scandals in the races, with hardly any ink left for the issues, or
even some of the candidates. Spending massive amounts of money was the
only way candidates could get their messages, even in a limited way,
through to the general public.
As soon as the Observer meets its own role in the political
environment, I will give credit to its advice to everyone else.
Sincerely,
Christopher Cole
